Hey, Charlie Frye, loosen up

by Instant.Raiders

Charlie Frye doesn’t have Jeff Garcia-level experience, but the guy has been around some. He has four NFL seasons under his belt, with 20 starts and better than 3,500 yards at quarterback.

But it’s never too late to learn a new lesson.

Frye got one against the 49ers on Saturday evening: Don’t forget to limber up the ol’ soup bone before entering a really limber up.

I was over there throwing 10-yard throws, and came into the game and was asked to throw like a 20-yard hook route, and airmailed it,” Frye told me afterward. “Come off to the sideline, and I was standing over by the cheerleaders launching balls after that. Because I don’t miss that throw. And that’s probably the biggest thing that I can take away from the game, is when I come in off the bullpen, try to be a little looser.”

Frye entered the game at the 11:16 mark of the fourth quarter, and immediately overthrew Nick Miller. Carlos Thomas intercepted for the Niners, setting up a short touchdown drive.

After that, Frye was 3 of 4 for 47 yards, keeping alive his competition with Bruce Gradkowski for the No. 3 quarterback spot. Of course, Frye also had a 14-yard touchdown run, finished off with a spectacular dive to the pylon, with 3:30 left.

A few other notes from yesterday’s loss:

* I wonder how much grief DE Greg Ellis will take in his next position meeting — or has taken already — after being taken out by QB Alex Smith’s block on a reverse.

* Don’t be surprised if DT Terdell Sands gets cut before the regular season. He showed up to camp looking pretty fit (by Terdellian standards), but has made almost no impact. Saturday, William Joseph and Desmond Bryant both got work at defensive tackle before the massive Sands.

* Kirk Morrison’s dislocated elbow could make it convenient for the Raiders to start Ricky Brown at middle linebacker for the regular-season opener, and to keep him there. Morrison is immensely popular among teammates and fans, but hasn’t done enough to stop the run over the past four seasons. And it may surprise you to learn — it surprised me — that Brown is actually slated to make more money this year than Morrison, who is in the final year of his rookie contract.

* Historically, cornerback might be the Raiders’ strongest position. The team is dreadfully thin there now, however. That became apparent when Nnamdi Asomugha left the game early to nurse his sore heel. Stanford Routt and Chris Johnson were the first-team guys in Asomugha’s absence. No embarrassment there. But the nickel corner was Justin Miller, who is known primarily as a kick returner.

* Rookie TE Brandon Myers was one of the stars of the game, catching a 2-yard touchdown pass from Gradkowski after setting it up with a 36-yard reception. And no one who had seen Myers in practice last week was a bit surprised. The kid has been sensational lately. Hmmm, time to write a feature on Myers.

GARCIA ISN’T THE ANSWER — No, based on what he showed against the 49ers, Jeff Garcia isn’t the answer when Russell fails. Maybe Frye is the guy. Or maybe Gradkowski. Sorry that Garcia bombed; maybe injury but more likely old age.
