Schilens inactive for Raiders
So much for the Tuesday press release, the arranged group interview and forced media buzz. Chaz Schilens is inactive today.
The Raiders made such a big deal out of Schilens’ return to action this week, you would have thought he had 1,500 career receptions, not 15. But the team was premature in its excitement. Schilens felt soreness after practicing Wednesday and Thursday, and it’s now clear he’s not all the way back from foot surgery.
That’s bad news for QB JaMarcus Russell, who must once again try to create an on-field connection where none exists with guys like Darrius Heyward-Bey and Johnnie Lee Higgins.
And speaking of Oakland wide receivers, the worst fears of Heyward-Bey’s supporters have been realized. Michael Crabtree is three quarters into his first game, and he already has twice as many NFL receptions as the man drafted three spots ahead of him. Crabtree currently has four catches for 45 yards for the 49ers, who trail 21-7.
