Come March, at least 12 Raiders are expected to become unrestricted free agents, unless the team reaches out with contract extensions prior to that. (Special-teams leaders Isaiah Ekejiuba and Chris Carr will be restricted free agents, their services more easily locked up.) Can JaMarcus become the next Larry Lawrence?

Don’t touch those dials, Raiders fans. JaMarcus Russell may start this Sunday. That was the message sent by coach Lane Kiffin on Wednesday. “Quarterback-wise, I expect JaMarcus and Josh (McCown) to play,” Kiffin told reporters on the practice field in Alameda. “To what extent exactly, I don’t know that yet.” In which order, someone asked the coach? “I don’t know that yet,” he said. After a dismal 2006 season that saw the Raiders finish 2-14, many observers were convinced that Art Shell was the worst possible choice to coach the team.
